Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The theme of this paper is the investigation of relationships between the goals of the Theatre of the Oppressed and the Aesthetics of Perception, taking into consideration changing worldviews and conditions of production since the 1960ies and 1970ies. Whereas the revolutionary Latin American theatre movements, under the influence of Paulo Freire aimed to mobilize the masses towards democratisation, the Theatre of the Oppressed’s declared goal has been the humanisation of mankind, as published in the Declaration of Principles in 2003. The International Theatre of the Oppressed network (ITO) now comprises practitioners, groups and movements on all continents. This paper’s main theses is that, beyond its original context, the theatre of Augusto Boal has the potential to contribute to the sustainable development of societies as healing and learning entities in the 21st century. The investigation is divided into three parts. The first part consists of an analysis of Freirean roots and fundaments in TO, as well as the context of revolutionary theatre dis-course and Boal’s experiences in Latin America (the Freirean people’s cultural centres in Brazil, the period of the Arena Theatre and Boal’s participation in the Peruvian ALFIN alphabetisation project). Its essence is a Freirean interpretation of the Declaration of Principles of TO published in 2003. The second part attempts a type of geomorphological comparison and recon-struction of TO by analysing the Participatory Action Research of Orlando Fals Borda and the process of Collective Creation based on the work of Enrique Buenaventura. By means of this analysis the practice of TO is linked to emancipatory art and sciences in Colombia. The underlying goal of this comparison is to reintegrate essential context-based charac-teristics of TO, that might have been neglected or lost during its transfer into the Euro-pean context, in order to create an extended range of potential connections to challenges of the 21st century. The third part of the paper contextualises the Theatre of Augusto Boal in terms of an Aesthetics of Perception and an orientation towards Peace. On the physical, somatic lev-el it draws on the methodology of Moshé Feldenkrais’ school of perception, which was also referred to and used by Augusto Boal. This investigation concludes that the main endeavour of emancipatory research, scienc-es and arts lies in the attempt to reconstruct and to repossess history on a personal, bi-ography-based level as well as on a political community-based level. The Theatre of Au-gusto Boal, when understood as ‘autopoietic’, turns into a space for creation of the self (autopoiesis), a school of perception and communication, as well as into a sensitive, ar-tistic path through the process towards the many forms of dynamic, trans-rational peace.
