Eine Gruppe jugendlicher männlicher Fußballfans Großbritanniens der 1970er und
80er Jahre – genannt Casuals – habe ich in meiner Masterarbeit zum Thema
gemacht und dabei die Frage nach der visuellen Inszenierung durch den Modestil
gestellt. Deshalb ist ein Teil meiner Untersuchung dem visuellen Zugang der Analyse
von Bildern im Kontext der Casuals gefolgt, um so den Aspekt der modischen
Inszenierung besser untersuchen zu können. Der andere Teil meiner Untersuchung
ist theoretisch erfolgt. Die Theorien der Cultural Studies und von Georg Simmel
haben mir geholfen die Casuals als Subkultur und so auch die Funktion ihres
Modestils zu verstehen. Daran anknüpfend hat mir anschließend Phil Thorntons
Buch einen detaillierteren Blick in die Lebenswelt der Casuals und ihres Modestils
gewährt.
Ich bin in meiner Arbeit zu dem Ergebnis gekommen, dass die Casuals ihren
Modestil von Ikonen der populärkulturellen Bereiche des Sports, der Musik und auf
den Reisen im Zuge von Fußballspielen in Europa aufgeschnappt haben. Die teure
Markenkleidung als Teil dieses Stils haben die Casuals geraubt und damit die
Unmöglichkeit zum Ausdruck gebracht sich diese Kleidung zu leisten. Dadurch
haben sie nicht nur versucht ihren niedrigen soziale Status zu kompensieren und
sich der Zuschreibung zu ihrem Milieu der Arbeiterklasse widersetzen, sondern
ebenso eine gesellschaftliche Barriere durchbrochen. Abgegrenzt haben sie sich
dadurch auch von anders gekleideten Fußballfans, mit denen sie sich durch ihre
Inszenierung und gewaltsame Auseinandersetzungen gemessen haben. Als
gewalttätige Fans haben sie sich außerdem gegenüber der Polizei unkenntlich
gemacht.

In my master's thesis, I have investigated juvenile male Football fans in Great
Britain of the 1970s and 80s named Casuals. My research focused on the question
of the style they adopted and how they presented themselves visually. So one part
of my research followed a visual approach of analysing pictures in connection with
the Casuals, to get closer to the aspect of visual presenting. In the other part I
followed the theories of the Cultural Studies, which helped me to understand the
group as a subculture and the function of their style. Linked to that, the book of Phil
Thornton helped me to understand the cultural environment and the meaning of
their style in a more detailed way. The theory about the relevance of fashion in
society by Georg Simmel also explained aspects that made the view on the Casuals
and their presenting through fashion clearer.
In my thesis I came to the result, that the Casuals adopted their style of the idols of
the pop cultural areas of sport, music and in the course of journeys to football
matches through Europe. They robbed their expensive brand name clothes, which
were part of this style, and so expressed their inability to buy such clothes. Trough
that, they not only tried to compensate their low social status and to resist against
the classification as members of the working class, they also offended against social
rules. Additionally they made a distinction to other dressed football fans, with whom
they competed by presenting themselves as superior and through physical violence.
As violent fans they had also the intention to make themselves irrecognizable to the
police.
