Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The central aim of this master´s thesis is to draw a comparison between Critical Realism and
the critical social theorizing summed under the “Frankfurt School” label. Therefore, the main
emphasis will be on the epistemological premises of both theories. Both theories will be
separately outlined, before they are systematically compared. Each of the two theories
emphasizes different intrinsic aspects of scientific theories. Critical Realism is predominantly
concerned with ontological questions, whilst the “Frankfurt School” dwells mostly on
questions of the historical development of scientific and societal facts and theories.
The general conclusion of this comparison is that both aspects can just be conceptualized
together. In other words: every theory includes a “scientistic” and a “historistic” moment. Both
are inextricably mingled together in the social sphere; allthough they are still not one and the
same aspect; they can not be torn apart even theoretically.
Karl Marx’s “Critic of Political Economy” is a practical example of research that unites both
aspects without conflating them. As such they can just be incorporated into a criticaldialectical
theory of society.
The final part of this thesis is devoted to the immediate methodological consequences that
arise from the critical-realist and the critical-dialectical ontology advocated throughout this
text.
