Die unterschiedliche Bedeutung der politischen Links-Rechts-Dimension in 21 europäischen Gesellschaften wird untersucht. Anhand von Daten aus dem European Social Survey wird eine dreidimensionale Operationalisierung zur Erklärung von Links-Rechts-Selbsteinstufung bei den Befragten gewählt, basierend auf religiösen, sozio-ökonomischen und libertär-autoritären Einstellungen. Es zeigt sich, dass die Links-Rechts-Dimension in Nord- und Westeuropa wesentlich stärker mit Werteinstellungen verknüpft ist als in Süd- und Osteuropa. Zudem wird festgestellt, dass die sozio-ökonomische Dimension von Links-Rechts der dominante Bedeutungsinhalt ist. Die religiöse Dimension ist vor allem in katholischen oder katholisch-protestantischen Gesellschaften präsent. Die Bedeutung der libertär-autoritären Dimension variiert mit dem Grad wirtschaftlicher Entwicklung eines Landes.

This study examines the meaning of the political left-right dimension in 21 European societies. Data from the European Social Survey are used to explain respondents’ left-right self-identification based on religious, socio-economic and libertarian-authoritarian value orientations. The results of the analysis show that the left-right dimension’s association with value orientations is much stronger in Northern and Western Europe than in Southern and Eastern Europe. Also, it is shown that the socio-economic dimension constitutes the most dominant meaning component of the left-right dimension. The religious dimension is particularly salient in Catholic or mixed Catholic-Protestant societies, whereas the strength of the libertarian-authoritarian dimension varies with a country’s level of economic development.
