Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Regarding to European institutions, the European Parliament is the only institution which is elected directly by the people. The question whether these elections should be seen in the national or in the European context is an essential question. A very prominent theory about European Parliament Election is the second-order theory, which states that elections on the European level should be seen in a national (first-order) context. Assuming critics on the validity of the second order theory other models indicate a certain degree of ‘European’ factors, which affect the voting behaviour. This paper focuses on the question if and which European factors exist. I am focussing on three possible European factors: the general view on European Integration, the view on European Integration regarding policies and the view on European Integration regarding political projects. Furthermore a new classification of voters (party stalwart and swing voters) instead of the distinction between voters and non-voters will be tested. This new classification should enhance the explanation of electoral behaviour in the context of European Parliament Elections.
