Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

The topic of this thesis is the »image« of poetry. A personification of poetry will be examined: the eternal young Knabe Lenker, who makes his appearance in Goethe’s Faust II. This paper begins with an introduction of the context, the scene in which the boy comes on stage, and continues by taking a closer look at the boy’s and his companions’ verses as well as Lenker’s looks and features. It concludes by returning to the context and revising its interpretation with the help of the new understanding of its leading character. The choice of topic was triggered by a fascination in authors and audience alike with the image of eternally young, androgynous, flying beings. The picture is widely used in literature, often to represent »poetry«. Conspicuously many of these representatives are to be found in the works of Johann Wolfang Goethe: Mignon in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, the gypsy boy in Novelle, a number of infant characters taking part in the court masquerades in Weimar and Euphorion, Faust and Helena’s son born in the third act of Faust II. This analysis takes the characters mentioned above into consideration, but its focus is on Knabe Lenker, the model representative of Goethe’s poetical children. He is the helmsman of a flying carriage and appears as the embodiement of poetry in the middle of the carnevalesque happenings of the first act in Faust II. An accurate analysis of the scene defines the boy’s position in it and enables to acquire some of his distinctive features. His way of speaking and his behavior make the difference between him and the other members of the carneval obvious; he is only a visitor and leaves stage quite quickly after unsuccessfully offering the gift of inspiration. The words Knabe Lenker, his companion Plutus and the carneval’s guard Herold exchange, revolve mostly around one topic: the appearance and being of the young helmsman. This division (appearance and being) corresponds with the traditional definition of allegory – Knabe Lenker defines himself as this trope. The type of allegory used by the author in Faust II is a further development of the conventional figure of speech known from the baroque epoque. Goethe’s classical definition and the description of the newly defined trope in Heinz Schlaffers Faust Zweiter Teil. Die Allegorie des 19. Jahrhunderts helps to understand the interplay of text and picture – in the case of Knabe Lenker: of appearance and being. His looks hold a great deal of meaning, which, however, needs decoding. There are many ways a picture used in a literary context becomes the bearer of meaning exceeding its own image: signs of self-awareness, raised dynamism, the technique of collage and reference - to name only a few. The chapter »Das Bild« uses the characters of Faust II to examplify those methods, it demonstrates the new instrumentalization of images in literature around 1800, as made distinct by literary theory focusing on the picture (this paper mostly refers to Monika Schmitz-Emans’ Die Literatur, die Bilder und das Unsichtbare. Spielformen literarischer Bildinterpretationen vom 18. bis 20. Jahrhundert and Helmut Pfotenhauer’s Sprachbilder. Untersuchungen zur Literatur seit dem achtzehnten Jahrhundert.). As a consequence of this examination the appearance of Knabe Lenker may now be seen as a composition made up by features of different origin. Most of them are references to greek mythology, but the unconventional way they are used, distances them from their antique backgrounds. This is revealed by the analysis of the three discourses: »Eternal Youth«, »Flight« and »Androgyny« which are the main attributes of Knabe Lenker. They are looked at from a point of view which takes their affinity to poetry into account. Additionally one image connected to one of each discourses and resembling the figure of Knabe Lenker to a surprising extent is presented; possible implications of the similarity between these figures being the object of interest. This seemingly modern technique of using images in literature adds to the complexity of Knabe Lenker’s character. Consequently new ways of interprating the Mummenschanz-scene emerge, the boy being its main character. Traditional predecessor of the carneval are the Greek wine feasts. Within their course of event, it would be the task of Knabe Lenker, who carries signs of the Holy and Dionysiac, to contribute the essential idealistic value. But both, the boy himself and the carneval, are altered versions of the old. At the beginning of modernity, represented by the Mummenschanz, he cannot fullfill his task. The repressive form of social and mental conformity prevents the appearance of the exceptional.
