Kinder- und Jugendliteratur wurde bis vor wenigen Jahren in Öster-reich von Forschenden und Lehrenden kaum beachtet und als nicht ernst zu nehmende Lektüre abgetan. Immer mehr wird jedoch auch von der Fachwelt ihr künstlerischer und kulturhistorischer Wert er-kannt. Denn gerade hier lassen sich in den Texten und Illustrationen vorherrschende politische Strömungen, soziale Verhältnisse, morali-sche und pädagogische Ansichten der jeweiligen Epoche ablesen. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Sichtbarkeit der Kinder- und Jugendliteratur im Bestand der Sammlung von Handschriften und alten Drucken an der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek zu erhöhen und dadurch den Benutzerinnen und Benutzern einen erleichterten Zugriff auf diese äußerst umfangreiche, kunst- und kulturhistorisch wertvolle Sammlung zu ermöglichen. Das Potenzial dieses außergewöhnlichen Sonderbestandes als Forschungsfeld soll erkannt, und im Allgemeinen das Interesse an Kinder- und Jugendliteratur geweckt und verstärkt werden. Zunächst wird die Ausgangslage an der Bibliothek beleuchtet. Ferner werden folgende Fragen eingehend beantwortet: Wie finde ich diese spezielle Literatur im Bestand der Bibliothek? Wie kann ich sie darstellen bzw. sichtbar machen? Abschließend wird die Geschichte des Kinder- und Jugendbuchs in Österreich kurz geschildert und einige besondere, künstlerisch wertvolle und bibliophile Exemplare des 18. bis 21. Jahrhunderts aus dem Bestand der Sammlung von Handschriften und alten Drucken der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek vorgestellt werden.

Up until recently, historical and contemporary Children’s and Young Adult Literature was a neglected academic field in Austria and dis-missed as nonserious reading. The recent trends show, however, that its artistic, cultural and historical values are recognised among experts, as the prevailing political trends, social conditions, moral and educational views of the respective periods, in which they were written, are evident in the books‘ texts and illustrations. Following these trends, this paper highlights the collection of Child-ren’s and Young Adult Literature in the holdings of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Austrian National Library. With this, it aims to emphasize the potential of this collection as a research field and will hopefully increase the general interest in Children’s literature. Moreover, the paper aims to simplify the access to this extremely extensive, art-historically valuable collection, by addressing the following questions in detail: How can I find a particular item in the library? How can we increase the visibility of the holdings in the online catalogue in such a way that the items are easy to find and identified as a part of this collection? The last part of this paper outlines a short history of Children’s and Young Adult Literature in Austria, illustrated by special, artistically valuable and bibliophile copies from the 18th to the 21st century from the holdings of the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books at the Austrian National Library.
