PiratInnen beschäftigen die Menschheit seit Jahrhunderten immer wieder sowohl im Mythos als auch in der Realität. Die aktuellen Entwicklungen in Somalia, rund um das Horn von Afrika, und die Gerichtsprozesse gegen sogenannte "Web-Piraterie" sorgten in den letzten Jahren für ein erneutes mediales Aufleben des Themas. Diese Entwicklung geht zeitgleich einher mit einer Rückkehr von PiratInnenfiguren in Filmen - in Hollywood-Filmen im Speziellen (Pirates of the Caribbean 2003/2006/2007). Ausgehend von dieser Beobachtung nehme ich in der Arbeit die Gesichte der Piratenfilme aufs Korn, auf der Suche nach Verknüpfungen zwischen gesellschaftspolitischer Realität und filmischer Darstellung.
Die vorliegende Arbeit richtet ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf die Darstellung piratischer Figuren in Hollywood Filmen und deren Verschränkung mit gesellschaftspolitischen Wirklichkeiten im Produktionszeitraum. Im Sinne einer systematischen Filmanalyse nach Korte (2004) wird sowohl die Filmhandlung als auch der Produktions-, Rezeptions- und Bezugskontext analysiert. Der methodische Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Analyse der Hauptfiguren und der Darstellung der Werte "Freiheit" und "Unabhängigkeit" in dem Kontext (Figurenanalyse und Normen- und Werteanalyse nach Faulstich 2002). „Freiheit“ und „Unabhängigkeit“ spielen im Kontext mit einer mythologisierten Film-Piraterie eine zentrale Rolle. Diese wird zunächst mit der Zugehörigkeit der Figuren zu einer Nation diskutiert, auf einer zweiten Ebene im Geschlechterverhältnis zwischen der männlichen und der weiblichen Hauptrolle im Film. Der Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckt sich auf die 1930er bis 1950er Jahre.

Pirates bothered mankind for centuries, in myth as well as in reality. The current developments around the Horn of Africa and the Somalian Pirates, as well as lawsuits against „web-pirates“ took care of the revival of a pirate media presence during the last few years. Along with that, the pirate figure returned to the Hollywood movie (Pirates of the Caribbean 2003/2006/2007). Noticing this process, I follow the pirate movies back in their history and tried to find out more about the connection between sociopolitical reality and the portrayal of piratical figures in films.
The present paper focuses on the portrayal of pirates in Hollywood movies and their connection to the sociopolitical circumstances at the production period. Following a systematic film analysis (Korte 2004), the film story is being analyzed along with the time of production, the reception of the film and the historical context the film is relating to. Methodologically the film protagonists build the center of the analysis, along with the terms „freedom“ and „independence“ (Faulstich 2002). „Freedom“ and „independence“ are central categories when talking about the portrayal of pirates in movies. On one level the research focuses at the discussion of nationality, on a second level at gender roles and the relationship between the male and the female protagonist. The research period is between the 1930ies and the 1950ies.
