Theorien zur schulischen Sozialisation betonen die Bedeutung des Klassenunterrichts mit dem Einfluss von Lehrenden und Gleichaltrigen. Die Auswirkungen eines Unterrichts ohne Klassen in der Primarstufe sind kaum analysiert. Eine besondere Herausforderung Australiens liegt im Bildungserwerb von Lernenden in entlegenen Gebieten. Die Studie untersucht am Beispiel der Schools of the Air die Folgen von Distance Education.
Im ersten Teil wird ein Überblick über das Bildungssystem und seine geschichtliche Entwicklung erstellt. Darauf folgt eine Darstellung über Kompetenzmessungen und Untersuchungen zur Ungleichheit.
Die empirische Bearbeitung erfolgt durch einen Mixed Methods-Ansatz, der eine Online-Befragung von Lehrenden an Primarschulen in Western Australia, Interviews mit Experten und biografische Interviews mit Absolventen berücksichtigt.
Die Ergebnisse zeigen auf, dass Distance Education nach dem System der Schools of the Air in der Lage ist, die Kompetenzen während der Primarschulzeit gleichwertig zu Präsenzschulen zu fördern.
Der Erfolg der Distance Education liegt in der intensiven Mitwirkung der Eltern als Home Tutor, den individualisierten Lern- und Lehrmöglichkeiten und der Integration der Lernenden in die alltägliche Arbeitswelt der Eltern. Das Leben auf der Station verbunden mit Distance Education-Unterricht wird von den Lernenden als Freiheit empfunden, die isolierte Lage führt nicht zum Gefühl von Einsamkeit.

Research into socialisation during primary schooling marks the importance of classroom education due to the influence of teacher and peer group. The consequences of schooling without classroom are rarely analysed. Education of young students living in isolated areas means a special challenge to the Australian educational system. This study investigates the consequences of Distance Education using the example of the Schools of the Air.
The first part of this thesis offers an overview about the educational system and its historical development, followed by an overview regarding assessments of learner´s competencies and studies in inequality.
The empirical research is based on a Mixed Methods-Design, covering an online survey of teachers at primary schools in Western Australia, interviews with experts and biographical interviews with former learners in Distance Education.
Key findings are that the method of School of the Air in Distance Education promotes the competencies during primary years in an equivalent way to face-to-face schooling.
Intense support of parents in their function as home tutor, the individual learning and teaching opportunities and the learner´s integration in the daily work of the parents are the main reasons for the success of Distance Education. Learners describe station life combined with schooling by Distance Education as freedom, isolate living does not mean loneliness.
