Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit dem Genre der Utopie, das der Science-Fiction untergeordnet werden kann, und der Umsetzung des Stilmittels des Stream of Consciousness. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, ein Verständnis für die Begriffe Utopie und Stream of Consciousness aufzuzeigen, um nachfolgend den Film Hüter der Erinnerung – The Giver hinsichtlich der Utopiefähigkeit zu untersuchen. Utopien stellen Zukunfts- bzw. Möglichkeitsvisionen dar und weisen einen ambivalenten, positiven oder negativen, Grundton auf. Der Begriff der Utopie wird als klarer Oberbegriff verstanden, in der die Eutopie – der gute Ort – und die Dystopie – der schlechte Ort – in gleichen Maße teilhaben können. Das Stilmittel des Stream of Consciousness ist ein Versuch einen inszenierten, distanzlosen Blick in den Kopf einer Filmfigur zu werfen.
Eine systematische Literaturrecherche zu den Begriffe Utopie und Stream of Consciousness und eine systematische Filmanalyse nach Helmut Korte liefern die Basis für die Bearbeitung und Analyse der Filme Hüter der Erinnerung – The Giver und dessen Vergleichsfilme Metropolis, 1984 – Nineteen Eighty-Four und Equilibrium – Killer of Emotion anhand kategorisierter Themenfelder. Im Zentrum der Analysearbeit ist die Entwicklung einer utopischen Tradition, die einen Zusammenhang bzw. Vergleich zwischen den Filmen zulässt. Diese Themen umfassen Isolation, Staats- und Regierungsformen, Gesellschaft und Familie, Sprache, Kunst und Kultur, sowie Natur und Technik.

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of the genre of utopia, which can be subordinated to science fiction, and the realization of the stylistic cinematic device of the Stream of Consciousness. The aim of this thesis is to provide an understanding of the terms utopia and Stream of Consciousness, in order to examine the movie The Giver in terms of utopia. Utopias represent perspectives of the future and/or possibilities and have an ambivalent, positive or negative fundamental tone. The concept of utopia is divided in eutopia - the good place - and dystopia - the bad place. The stylistic device of the Stream of Consciousness is an attempt to throw a staged, distant view into the head of a film figure. Based on a systematic literature research on the topics Utopia and Stream of Consciousness as well as a systematic film analysis based on Helmut Korte’s deed, the movie The Giver and the comparison films Metropolis, 1984 - Nineteen Eighty-Four and Equilibrium - Killer of Emotion are analyzed and analyzed in order to the categorized thematic fields. Based on the analysis work the development of a utopian tradition allows a connection between the movies. These topics include isolation, state and government forms, society and family, language, art and culture, as well as nature and technology.
