The future of the city Merano is depending on the solution of its present traffi c issue. The current urban planning however is concentrating only on the creation of new infrastructure. The construction of new transportation routes and parking areas alone doesn-t resolve the traffi c problem yet, indeed it relocates it merely. Rather there has to occur an alternation within the basic understanding of mobility: not the number or dimension of the traffi c routes has to be enhanced, but the reachability of the destination has to be simplifi ed. This can be achieved only through a rehabilitation of the single little districts by off ering a certain range of diversity within the local convenience and supplies. By off ering accessibility to services, education and work, as well as to cultural off erings, leisure time facilities and recreation areas, local life can be encouraged which in turn forwards enhances urban diversity. A functioning local supply and an effi cient public transportation system allow a reduction of motorized individual traffi c. The unalluring traffi c spaces as yet used only for the purpose of transportation can be rethought as places of encounter and public life. Compact building structures allow cost effi cient living and leave enough space for attractive public areas with high service capacity. Only through an aggregation of the single interventions a revitalization of the intra urban fallow land can be successful and accordingly enable integration within the existing urban context. The ultimate intent should remain an increase of life quality within the urban context and a subsequent enhancing demand of intra urban living, so that urban sprawl can be limited. In succession a decrease of traffi c volume can be reached. As a consequence thereof the city of Merano would live up to it-s fame again.
