Hiller, S. (2013).
This thesis deals with the topic of the circle constant "Pi".
Beside the research concerning the name of the figure, a chronology of the history of approximations is depicted. Thereby it is analysed who dealt with its properties and approximations within the last 3500 years.
After the explanations and proofs concerning the specific properties of Pi, such as its irrationality and transcendence, as well as the question if Pi is normal, the various approximations are presented and compared.
Special focus is put on the one created by Archimedes, whereby the numerical cancellation and its influence are taken into consideration.
On top of that, the paper presents approximations in connection with trigonometric functions, the infinite product, upper and lower sums, power series, and the so-called "Monte-Carlo-method".
Furthermore, the impact of Pi on physics, art, the Bible and naturally on the science of mathematics are analysed.
The importance of the phrase "squaring the circle" can also be found in one chapter. Last but not least, some insight into the cult of Pi is given, where particular emphasis is laid upon the organisation "Friends of the number Pi". The sub-points of this same chapter concern themselves with weird number-games with Pi, with a book consisting of nothing but the decimal places of Pi and with the inofficial holiday in honour of the circle constant, the respective "Pi-Day". Finally, the usefulness of the number Pi is also reflected.
