The new school building in Krems-upon-Danube is not only designed to link the residential and recreational areas of the city. It is also a public complex designed to be used beyond its function as a school. A youth centre, a gym, an indoor swimming pool and a canteen/restaurant are integrated. It is designed as a skeleton structure made of wood. Its structure in modules of 4,25m x 4,25m allows for a flexible ground plan.
The school is based on three levels. On the ground level there are the entrances to the school administration, the youth centre, the library, the centre for after school learning groups, the canteen/restaurant and the gym - this is the passage. On the second level this space is used as an additional outdoor area, the roof terrace. Due to the height required, the gym, the library and the canteen/restaurant are constructed on two levels and have access to the roof terrace. Level three is accessed through the school administration on the ground floor.
On this level the classrooms are situated, which are used only during teaching hours.
In order to integrate the school building into the surrounding residential area the park area adjacent to the school building will be enhanced by a new routing and a public sports facility. All neighbouring schools will be linked by a green space used by all schools. Thus a new school building will be created that brings together the every day life of the residential area and the green space and goes beyond the concept of a traditional school building.
