Herrmann, P. (2013).
A fair amount of old railway bridges is reaching the end of their technical life cycle. Therefore, these bridges need to refurbished or replaced by new structures. At the time of their design and construction the open railway deck, where the sleepers are mounted directly on the steel superstructure, was considered as state of the art. This type of railway deck is characterized by an extremely low construction depth between the lowest level of the superstructure and the top of the sleepers. On one hand, the open deck cannot be used any more for modern railway bridges for reasons of its high noise emission.
On the other hand, it is usually impossible to change the levels of the clearance under and the level of the rail track on the bridge. This results especially for the substitution of old trough-, truss- and arc bridges in the discrepancy between the low given construction depth and the relatively high demand of modern railway track systems like the ballast bed or the nonballasted track. This specific problem can only be solved by the use of extremely slender deck slab constructions. The Institute of Structural Engineering/ Steel Structures developed a trough bridge system for the ÖBB, which is applicable for spans up to 25m and contains an unstiffened massive steel deck slab. This deck plate requires a thickness of 120mm and can be understood as the absolute minimum of possible construction depth. On the other hand, these steel decks show various disadvantages like the high construction weight, a limited availability on the market or the technically demanding welded joints.
This thesis shall present an alternative solution to the unstiffened deck plate which provides sufficient load bearing capacity at an approximately similar construction height. The main idea of the Steel- Concrete- Steel- Composite or SCSC-plate is to replace the material which is located near to the neutral axis and therefore barely stressed by transverse load bearing action by the more economical concrete. The high bending moment resistance can be reached by steel layers which are placed at the highly stressed outer zones of the cross section. To be able to activate the "Steiner"- parts of the moment of inertia it is necessary to establish a shear force resistant connection of the outer steel layers. As a side effect the connection of the steel layers to the super structure avoids problematic vertical joints between a concrete plate and the steel main girders of the bridge. Furthermore the outer steel plates work as a sealing of the whole concrete surface and therefore increase the durability in comparison to conventional reinforced concrete decks.
The thesis is divided into five blocks. In Block 1 the construction of the SCSC-plate itself is described as well as its production, the main load carrying function and its production costs. Therefore the plate will be described in detail with its fundamental bearing mechanisms and the necessary elements to activate these mechanisms. After that, the construction height and production costs of the SCSC-plate will be compared to heights and costs of usual modern railway bridge decks according to the state of the art. Block 2 describes the experimental static strength tests which were carried out in the laboratory of the Institute of Structural Engineering. These laboratory tests are numerically verified by the use of highly complex non- linear finite element- models in Block 3. The FE- analysis is mainly needed to extract the required results for the derivation of mathematical models which describe the load bearing function. Block 4 presents the derivation of these engineering models by the help of results of the laboratory tests and the FE- analysis in detail. Various possibilities of modelling are presented, compared and assessed. In the last block, Block 5, an adequate engineering model is applied in an exemplary static analysis of an SCSC-plate, based on the trough bridge design.
Summing up, it will be shown that the SCSC-plate is a sufficiently load-bearing structure which is producible in an easy and economical way and thus is a competitive alternative compared to traditional bridge deck plate systems. Furthermore, some engineering models will be presented to describe the complex load bearing behaviour of this new construction type in a keenly easy way. Hence, this thesis provides a first important step for an applicability of the SCSC-plate in bridge constructions.
