Abstract:
The capital of Cyprus is divided into two halves by the so-called "Green Line" and there is only one area in the buffer zone which is open to the public from both sides: the Markou Drakou / Sultan Selim II Street in front of the Ledra Palace together with the moat in the vicinity of the checkpoint on the western edge of the Old Town. For over 20 years bi-communal activities have been taking place in this neutral territory, and even today it is a popular meeting place for young people and adults from both communities. For those Cypriots who never cross to the other side and/or refuse to show their passport in downtown Nicosia, it is actually the only possible meeting place on the island (apart from the village of Pyla/Pile). Because of these reasons, I chose to have the building site in the moat at this juncture. The thesis begins with a definition of youth, a summary of the situation of young people in Cyprus and reflections about their value orientations, interests, leisure activities, areas of life and attitudes towards the future of the island. It also explains forms and objectives of youth work and incorporates a definition of the term "youth centre" which is followed by the presentation of two model facilities in the Mediterranean region: the Euro-Latin-American Youth Centre CEULAJ in Spain and the Jerusalem International YMCA in Israel. Afterwards historical and climatic conditions on the island and a number of construction forms of the traditional Cypriot house are outlined. The thesis also discusses the urban situation in the old town of Nicosia and the related consequences of war and division, such as outflow of residents and neglect. In order to address these specific challenges the Nicosia Master Plan (NMP) was launched as a model of bi-communal cooperation between architects in the north and south of the capital.
The NMP focuses on the rehabilitation and urban development of the historic city centre but omits newly constructed buildings. At the end of its theoretical part the thesis deals with characteristics of the buffer zone in Nicosia/Cyprus and describes initiatives promoting dialogue and cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. In contrast to the two above-mentioned institutions (CEULAJ and Jerusalem International YMCA) the youth centre presented here mostly focuses on daily activities in the spirit of open youth work for all age groups of young people. Apart from the daily programme, the centre also provides adolescent visitors from outside of Nicosia with lodging facilities.
