In the present diploma thesis the thermoelectric properties of cubic type I Ba-Ge-based clathrates are studied, where Ge in Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Ge 43 [Ge tief 43]V' 3 [V' tief 3] (V' is a vacancy) is substituted by Ag: Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Ag x [Ag tief x]Ge 46-x [Ge tief 46-x], x=2, 3, 4, 5; Pd & Zn: Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Pd x [Pd tief x]Zn y [Zn tief y]Ge 46-x-y [Ge tief 46-x-y]; Cu & Zn: Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Cu x [Cu tief x] Zn y [Zn tief y] Ge 46-x-y [Ge tief 46-x-y]; Si & Zn: Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Si x [Si tief x] Zn y [Zn tief y] Ge 46-x-y [Ge tief 46-x-y].
The synthesis of these materials as well as the structural investigations were conducted by Navida Nasir and Isolde Zeiringer at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, University of Vienna. The structural investigations in all cases confirmed cubic primitive symmetry consistent with the space group type Pm-3n of a typical type I clathrate structure with lattice parameters ranging from about 1.05 nm to about 1.08 nm.
Thermoelectric properties (electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient) were measured in a broad temperature range from 4.2 to about 800 K, demonstrating that substitution allows fine tuning of the charge carrier density, shifting the materials into the proximity of a metal-to-insulator transition. This is evidenced from giant thermopower reaching values of about 400 [my]V/K in the case of Ba 8 [Ba tief 8]Cu 5.2 [Cu tief 5.2]Zn 0.8 [Zn tief 0.8]Ge 40.0 [Ge tief 40.0] at temperatures well below room temperature (T about 150 K).
