The question subject to this thesis is whether the use of location aware electronic navigational aids results in a decrease of acquired spatial knowledge, as supposed in the present work.
The formation of cognitive maps is understood as a learning process in which information about the environment is integrated into the long term memory. To accomplish this, the data is to be interpreted and nested into the mental representation of the environment.
The way information on spatial reality is aquired determines how strong the data is anchored to the memory. There are two fundamental options presented for negotiating the environment. On the one hand there is the use of traditional maps which goes along with a more thorough elaboration of information provided by the map, thus supporting the development of spatial knowledge. On the other hand navigating through the environment under guidance offers rather shallow information on the environment and provides less support to the formation of a cognitive map.
A study has been conducted under real conditions and is aimed to compare the acquisition of spatial knowledge under the deployment of maps and under the condition of guidance on the opposite. The results support the hypothesis. The subjects perfomed better in the the test deploying maps than in those where the electronic navigational aids came to use.
