Abstract:
The aim of this work was to describe transport and thermodynamical properties of Yb compounds such as YbCu_4.5 and Yb_0.78Y_0.22Cu_4In possessing complex crystal structures.
Susceptibility measurement of Yb_0.78Y_0.22Cu_4In confirmed an almost 3+ state of the Yb ions, yielding a 4f13 electronic configuration. There is, however a possibility of a small admixture of Yb2+ to the dominating Yb3+ states. This can be read off from an effective magnetic moment in the proximity of the theoretical one.
Yb_0.78Y_0.22Cu_4In orders antiferromagnetically below about 15 K. There is a second magnetic phase transition into a presumably ferromagnetic state below 6 K. Pressure suppresses both phase transitions and temperature dependent resistivity above 5 kbar does not show any sign of ordering anymore.
For both compounds, particularly for YbCu_4.5, Fermi liquid properties are evident at low temperatures. This results from the Kondo effect and RKKY interaction, competing each other, while the crystal field effect splits the degenerated energy states. In Yb_0.78Y_0.22Cu_4 a Kondo temperature of about 20 K is deduced.
The effective magnetic moment (4.54mu_B), measured along the c-axis of YbCu4.5, matches perfectly the theoretical value (4.54mu_B) of Yb3+ ions. YbCu4.5 does not order magnetically and can be accounted for in terms of a model of Cornut and Copblin. The temperature at the resistivity maximum (T_max) and therefore the Kondo temperature decreases if pressure rises. This is a unique behaviour of Yb systems and does not occur in any other Kondo materials. By applying magnetic fields, T_max rises. It turns out that binary YbCu_4.5 is dominated by a YbCu_4.4 phase rather than by the nominal one. Right now, there is no possibility to disentangle both phases.
