Abstract:
The local conductivity of single crystals of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been investigated by measuring impedance spectra at 350°C. By applying a DC voltage up to 110 V between a Pt microcontact of 80 µm diameter and a large Pt counter electrode a visible blackened spherical reduction front spread through the sample, with the microcontact as the center. Impedance spectra measured after disconnecting the DC voltage indicated an increased value of the local conductivity around the microcontact which reflects strongly enhanced electron conduction in YSZ. Subsequently a characteristic relaxation of the conductivity took place, associated with the collapse of the reaction front. The inhomogenity of the local conductivity within the reduction zone was determined, assembling a profile of the reduced surface by sampling microcontacts in the vicinity of the center contact.
The electronic activation energy of 0,85eV was calculated from experimental data.
