Abstract:
In this thesis some aspects of the quantum theory of topological field models are investigated. The thesis consists of three parts dealing with the quantisation of the massless Thirring model, the sine Gordon model and the model of topological fermions (MTF).
The Thirring model is a fermionic quantum field theory in 1+1 spacetime dimensions. It is exactly solvable and hence an interesting laboratory to study quantum effects in a nonperturbative way. While it is well known that the massive Thirring model is renormalisable, the massless model was thought to be nonrenormaliseable. The reason for this lies in the fact that for a renormalisability it is necessary that all dynamical dimensions calculated from different correlation functions are equal. Only in this case it is possible to remove all divergences by renormalisation of the fermion wave functions. The solutions of the massless Thirring model obtained so far do not allow to have equal dynamical dimensions for all correlation functions and hence it is not possible to renormalise the massless Thirring model with these solutions. In this thesis a more general solution to the massless Thirring model is obtained, which is parameterised by two parameters. For special values of these parameters all known solutions can be obtained. Using this generalised solution it is possible to have equal dynamical dimensions and to renormalise the massless Thirring model.
In the second part of this thesis the quantisation of the sine Gordon model is investigated. This soliton model has a wide range of applications. It is exactly solvable and equivalent to the massive Thirring model. In this thesis it is shown that the divergences appearing in the sine Gordon model can be removed by the renormalisation of the dimensional coupling constant. Using path integral techniques the quantum correction to the mass of a soliton are calculated in continuous spacetime and within the discretisation technique with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions and rigid walls. The obtained results agree completely. Finally, it is shown that the finite contribution to the quantum mass of a soliton found in the literature arises due to a noncovariant procedure.
In the third part of the thesis the quantisation of the model of topological fermions (MTF), a recently developed soliton model in 3+1 dimensional spacetime, is investigated. The model is designed to describe charged particles as stable topological solitons and electromagnetic waves in a unified manner. It is found that applying standard technology of soliton quantisation to the MTF does not yield sensible results. Nevertheless, a solution to this problem is stated.
