Abstract:

The land use in cities all over the world is increasing. Urban population and functions migrate more and more frequently to the periphery. This phenomenon, also known as suburbanization, leads to far extended city areas and challenges planners all over the world. Austrian cities are also faced with this trend. The main focus of this work lies on the development of Wiener Neustadt, a city located in the south of lower austria with about 44.000 inhabitants. The city, also known as „Allzeit Getreue“, was an important industrial city in the 20th century and developed in the recent past to a popular business location - a development with consequences? With urban expansions and establishing of big companies and shopping centers in the periphery, the image of the city centre is shaped by closed shops in the ground floor zones. The need of reorganization and the creation of new strategies are obvious. The issue of this work concerns with the whole urban area and the possibility to regrow a fragmented city to a compact unit again.
