Abstract:
This paper describes and analyses to what extent offshore wind energy can be used by European Union Member States to reach their renewable energy targets of 32% by 2030 and at the same time reduce their CO2 emissions by 382 Mt. It not only looks at the designs of bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind turbines but identifies the main issues that need to be addressed by the Member States of the European Union with a focus on the North Sea, which has already seen high numbers of wind farms being build, and the Baltic Sea, which has a lot of potential to offer.
