Bus, C. (2018).

Denise Scott-Brown posed the question of whether megastructure is not much more of a movement of the 19th century rather than the late 20th century. Rayner Banham referred to futurism and compared the aesthetic qualities of Antonio SantElia drawings with those of some megastructural concepts and buildings. The work shows the influence of the short oeuvre of the futurist Antonio Sant‘Elia at the beginning of the 20th century on megastructure, a movement between 1955 and 1973 and its architects. Based on a brief overview of megastructure and futurism, the two movements are then getting compared. First in their intentions, which were stated in the manifestos, followed by an analysis of the drawings of the futuristic project of the Città Nuova and two megastructural projects Plug-in City by Peter Cook and Helix-City by Kisho Kurokawa. The images are described with an image analysis based on Panofsky. The comparison shows that both movements have similarities. Mobility should be a determining factor of the future society and the city concepts should enable this mobility. Technological progress was a key factor to be able to realize these concepts. Because of that the drawings of the ideas and concepts of both movements showed the new city in a radical form and thus challenged established architectural traditions. The types of representations in both movements are not technical plans, but are composed of perspectives and infographics. This shows a clear influence of the futurists on the megastructure.
