The impact of market sentiment and other exogenous variables on corporate bonds

Abstract

In this thesis we try to detect the possible impact of market sentiment and other exogenous variables, on corporate bond yields. After an Introduction that will analyse the available data, we will elaborate on some theory behind the techniques used to predict the future bond yields and the sentiment scores in general. We then talk about the general approach used for generating and comparing the forecasts. The final step will be to use four different approaches to try to predict the bond yields, based on their own history, sentiment scores and other explanatory variables. Starting with ARMA-GARCH and STAR models we will then take a look at recurrent neural network models. After introducing and using the "Long Short-term" memory neural networks we will apply the recently developed "Dual-Stage Attention-Based Recurrent Neural Network" and measure its predictive power for the bond market.

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Einfluss der Marktstimmung und anderer exogener Variablen auf die Rendite von Unternehmensanleihen. Dazu werden Prognosemodelle entwickelt, die Maßzahlen für die Marktstimmung ("sentiment" und "buzz") sowie andere mögliche erklärende Variable für die Prognose der Renditen verwenden. Es werden zwei klassische Modelle der Zeitreihenanalyse (ARMA-GARCH und STAR) sowie zwei moderne rekurrente neuronale Netze (LSTM und DA-RNN) verwendet und miteinander verglichen. Die Hyperparameter der Modelle (z.B. zur Beschreibung der Netzwerk-Architektur) werden mit Hilfe eines Kreuz-Validierungsverfahren bestimmt. Für den abschließenden Vergleich der Modelle wird ein Test-Datensatz verwendet. Das ARMA-GARCH Modell (das nur das "sentiment" im GARCH Teil verwendet) liefert die besten Hitrates während das DA-RNN Netz bezüglich des RMSE am besten abschneidet. Das DA-RNN Netzwerk verwendet neben dem "sentiment" noch ein Reihe von anderen erklärenden Variablen.
