Abstract:
In an introductory chapter the main ideas and concepts of the optimal control theory are intuitively introduced. Furthermore a simple class of optimal control models is defined. Within this general class three models are analysed and interpreted related to the two concepts of local and global optimality. In all of these models so-called Dechert-Nishimura-Skiba (DNS) points, thresholds and regions of multiple local optimal solutions arise. Because of the relative simplicity of these models a complete characterization of the models optimal behavior, within the parameter space can be given. In most cases these regions of different optimal policies are restricted by analytically give bifurcation lines. The interpretation of these policies are stated in respect to the two concepts of local and global optimality. Furthermore the theory of sufficient second order conditions (matrix Riccati Differential equations) for optimal control models are embraced and clearly arranged as far as it was of importance for the analysed models. Moreover the theorem of the sufficient second order conditions are proven for the infinite time horizon problem under the assumption of convergence to a saddle point.
As a further crucial point the problem of finding an exact definition of a DNS point and DNS threshold is treated, where the focus is laid on the tension of intuition versus formal strength. But under this aspect of intuitive understanding and formal explication the whole thesis can be read and these problems of tension were expounded in the introduction.
