Populisten sind weder einfach Gegner der Demokratie noch des Rechtsstaats. Populismus ist vielmehr eine Herausforderung für ihre notwendige Einheit als konstitutionelle Demokratie. Das Gegenmittel ist deshalb auch nicht eine Stärkung des Rechtsstaats womöglich auf Kosten der Demokratie, sondern die Stärkung der dialektischen Einheit von Rechtsstaat und Demokratie durch die Durchsetzung der politischen Grundrechte, der Gewaltenteilung, der Rechtssicherheit und weiterer rechtsstaatlicher Elemente. Der Erfolg des Populismus würde die politische Freiheit selbst aufheben.

Populists are neither simply opponents of democracy nor the rule of law. Rather, populism is a challenge to their necessary unity as constitutional democracy. The antidote is therefore not to strengthen the principle of the legal state (rule of law), possibly at the expense of democracy, but to strengthen the dialectical unity of the principle of the legal state and democracy through the enforcement of fundamental political rights, the separation of powers, legal security and other elements of the principle of the legal. The success of populism would abolish political freedom itself.
