Abstract

The relation between language and normativity plays an important role in Judith Butler’s thinking. Her reflections revolve around the linguistic-philosophical notion of performativity, which Butler not only utilizes to explain the effectivity of norms but also for the critical analysis of political practices. My paper starts with a reconstruction of Butler’s problematization of the ambivalent, both repressive and productive character of norms and scrutinizes the implications of Butler’s performative notion of normativity for the conceptualization of subjectivity, sovereignty and agency. The main thesis is that the ambivalence of social norms can be explained via the speech acts of promise and threat – precisely in regard to its performative character. Referring to the concepts of promise and threat in order to figure the mode of action performed by norms not only allows for an explication of central aspects of the social effectivity of norms but also to accentuate the inherent fragility of norms that may be put to use for critique of and resistance against violent processes of normalization.
