Abstract

As the current system leads to a rapid resource consumption, there might not be enough materials to meet the growing global demand in the future. Consequently, there is a need for sustainable products and the industry plays a vital role. The new design strategy Cradle to Cradle (C2C) aims at creating products with a positive impact on humans and ecology to change the current wasteful system. Due to the novelty of the concept, there is not a great amount of research. Thus, the objective of this work was to gather relevant literature through a systematic literature review and to analyze the content in order to collect knowledge about the concept as well as the implementation from a business perspective. The findings of the qualitative content analysis revealed insight into different thematic areas concerning the C2C concept. Moreover, challenges and solutions on product, company and network level were identified. The main realization of this work was that collaboration is the significant factor in the implementation process and facilitates knowledge as well as innovation. Hence, these three factors were recognized as the basis for C2C product creation. Lastly, the discussion focused on these three aspects of C2C and compared the findings to circular economy research.
