In traditional organizations, people generally have a fixed working hour, and work in a hierarchical manner. Employees must report to the superiors about the current progress of their work, and the superiors are usually the ones who give tasks to the employees. However, as time goes on, more and more people begin getting fed up to work in an inflexible manner. Therefore, people start to establish Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAO), which are organizations that are deployed on a blockchain system, using a series of codes called “smart contracts” to execute decisions made by the members in the organizations. Such organizations also have flat hierarchy, meaning each member in the organizations have an equal right to vote to the organization, providing that they have enough token to do so. Unfortunately, these organizations can be quite volatile in practice, as members can join and leave at any time without any consequences. Furthermore, currently there are no research that analyzes the motivation drivers for contributing to DAOs. This thesis aims to find out the motivation drivers of contributing to DAO, by using high-ranked journals to obtain the papers from the OSS literature and extract the motivation drivers from these papers. Using these papers from OSS literature, the hypotheses are then formulated. The most significant findings from the OSS literatures are intrinsic motivation (such as passion for DAO), and also extrinsic motivation (such as reputation from other members in DAO) affect both participation and commitment to the DAO. The participation and commitment to DAO are also found to have a negative impact on turnover. Finally, the OSS and DAO literatures also show that the presence of tokens moderates both the participation and commitment to the turnover of DAO, as well as directly affecting both participation and commitment to DAO. It is hoped that in the future, DAOs can implement some of the findings from this thesis to help them retain the members, and to reduce the volatility of them.
