In times when customers are daily faced with a huge amount of information about products, services, brands and companies, word-of-mouth is used as a filter. Other customers expertise is an important information source for future buying decisions. This exchange of information does not limit itself to a traditional bilateral way of communication anymore. The new technological opportunities have moved the exchange more and more into the internet. Especially social networking sites provide their users the possibility to interactively and socially exchange information and thus represent a good space for word-of-mouth or electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) as it is called in the digital environment. Contrary to the advantages of positive eWOM, companies are suspicious of the negative form, because negative eWOM can have a harmful effect on the future business success. To better understand the origin of negative eWOM, this paper examines how five social relationship factors (tie strengths, bridging social capital, bonding social capital, homophily and trust) influence the negative eWOM communication behaviour of facebook users. Altough the results of the study show that facebook is rarely used for negative eWOM, a significant influence of tie strength, bridging social capital and trust on the negative eWOM behaviour of facebook users could be determined. This paper not only gives an insight into today’s user behaviour on facebook, it also contributes to a better understanding of the negative eWOM process. |
