Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Aspekten des Regionalismus und untersucht die atlantisch kanadische Region an der Ostküste Kanadas. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie diese Region in Kurzgeschichten von atlantisch kanadischen Autoren dargestellt wird. Die Ostküste Kanadas wird häufig rein als schöne Urlaubsdestination gesehen. In der Literatur dieser Gegend hingegen, werden viele problematische Aspekte, die diese Region prägen, aufgegriffen und literarisch dargestellt. Beginnend nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, durchlebten die maritimen Provinzen eine Zeit des ökonomischen Verfalls. Auch heute noch ist die wirtschaftliche Lage in diesen Provinzen eher problematisch. Die Region ist geprägt von einem Mangel an Arbeitsplätzen, weswegen unzählige Menschen die Region laufend verlassen. Weiters sind die maritimen Provinzen stark vom Tourismus, einer der wenigen florierenden Sparten in der Region, abhängig. Im theoretischen Teil der Arbeit wird das Konzept ‚Regionalismus‘ erklärt und definiert. Im Fokus der folgenden Kapitel stehen Kurzgeschichten von Alistair MacLeod, Lesley Choyce, Sheldon Currie, Lynn Coady, Michael Crummey, Wayne Johnston und Lisa Moore. Um im formalen Rahmen der Arbeit zu bleiben, war es unmöglich auf alle atlantisch kanadischen Provinzen einzugehen. Deswegen habe ich entschieden, die Provinzen Nova Scotia und Newfoundland zu untersuchen. In den Kurzgeschichten wird der Alltag von den Kanadiern, die an der Ostküste leben, beschrieben. Weiters werden die wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Schwierigkeiten, die das Leben in diesen Regionen betreffen, durch die Kurzgeschichten dargestellt. Im nächsten Kapitel der Arbeit werden die Meinungen und Ansichten von Experten auf dem Gebiet des Regionalismus und der atlantischen kanadischen Literatur zusammengefasst. Das letzte Kapitel basiert auf einer Feldstudie, die mit kanadischen Studierenden an der University of New Brunswick durchgeführt wurde. Die Ergebnisse der Studie werden angeführt und diskutiert.

This thesis focuses on aspects of regionalism and examines how the region of Atlantic Canada is portrayed in various short stories by Atlantic Canadian authors. Atlantic Canada is a region that is often seen as a beautiful, picturesque holiday destination, whereas in literature many of the more problematic aspects that afflict this region are taken up in a critical manner. The Maritimes went through a phase of huge economic decline starting after the First World War and ever since the economic situation in Atlantic Canada has been rather problematic. The region heavily depends on tourism and there is a lack of jobs, which leads to numerous people leaving the region every year. In the theoretical chapter of this thesis regionalism is described. The central focus in the following chapters is on short stories from Atlantic Canada and their depiction of regional aspects. The short stories dealt with in the thesis are exclusively written by authors from Atlantic Canada, such as Alistair MacLeod, Lesley Choyce, Sheldon Currie, Lynn Coady, Michael Crummey, Wayne Johnston and Lisa Moore. To narrow the scope of the thesis, only two Atlantic Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, are concentrated on. The short stories portray the lives of Atlantic Canadians, the social and economic difficulties the region and the people living there are facing, the harsh environment in which people live and many more aspects of living in Atlantic Canada. Further, the thesis depicts the opinions of experts on the field of regionalism and Atlantic Canadian literature. The experts were interviewed and various questions from the interviews are discussed in the thesis. The last chapter of the thesis is based on a survey which was done with students at the University of New Brunswick. The students taking part filled out a questionnaire on Atlantic Canadian short stories and the importance of region. The evaluation of these questionnaires is summarised and discussed in the thesis.
