Economic development is a crucial matter in a globalized world. Analyzing the topic is, given its complexity, a challenging task. Many theories deal with economic development, but most fail to analyze economy in an integral way. The World-Systems Analysis and the Modernization theory, as two of the most prominent theories with quasi antagonistic theoretical assumptions, try to account for this obstacle. They look at the economic development of countries from a macro perspective. While this approach produces adequate analysis for some countries, it fails to explain the development in others. In this thesis it will be shown that through the addition of the factors demography and education it is possible to broaden the theories. Three steps are necessary to meet this objective. The first step is to combine demography with the World-Systems Analysis and the Modernization Theory. The second step is to analyze four countries, in this case the Congo, D.R., Argentina, South Korea and Austria, empirically. The countries’ historical, demographic, economic and educational development will be looked at. The last step is to compare the findings and to underline the value of demography for the analysis. This will produce more detailed results when describing and explaining the dynamic, historical economic development. Furthermore, through the empirical analysis of the DR Congo, Argentina, South Korea and Austria it will be shown that not only the explanations of economic development are more fruitful, but also that the theoretical discrepancies of the theories can be lifted. |
