This diploma thesis has its focus on the proofs of Euler's Formula and the application of the formula in graph theory. The current work is divided into three sections. The first section deals with the preparatory theory. Here the most important terms of graph theory are defined. In this section we also get in contact with the terms polyhedron and polytope. In the second section one can get an inside into the proofs of Euler's Formula. 20 proofs are presented. Some of them are dealing with three-dimensional polyhedra and others with the two-dimensional planar graph of a given polyhedra. There are also some proofs using higher-dimensional polytopes and the fact that their Euler-Characteristic is zero. In three dimensions this fact coincides with the Euler Formula. In this thesis, a lot of emphasis was given to detailed description of proofs using polyhedra and planar graph, so that they may be used in schools. In the last section one can find applications of Euler's Formula. First there are some smaller applications, like the five color theorem. Further on there are proofs of three important theorems of graph theory. These theorems are the Sylvester-Gallai theorem, the theorem about monochromatic lines and Pick's theorem. |
