Vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem ?Retro-Trend?, der sich in den letzten Jahren in Romanen der englischen Gegenwartsliteratur herausgebildet hat: eine Tendenz, Stilmittel des literarischen Modernismus zu verwenden. In Anbetracht der Abstinenz von Ironie, die dieser Tendenz eigen ist, erhält sie die Bezeichnung ?Neo-modernismus?. Die Analyse ausgewählter Romane zeigt, dass der Modernismus dort auf eine Art wiederverwendet wird, die eine klare Distanz von einem postmodernistischen, ironischen ?Recycling? älterer Stile und Stilmittel signalisiert. Während Virginia Woolf für einige Autoren des ?Neo-modernismus? inspirierend ist, können typische Elemente des Modernismus ganz allgemein in den relevanten Texten nachgewiesen werden. Diese Texte sind allerdings stilistisch hybrid, d.h. auch realistische und entschärfte postmodernistische Elemente kommen in ihnen vor ? wobei modernistische Elemente das Übergewicht haben. Zur Analyse und Kategorisierung wird die Prototypentheorie herangezogen. Zunächst wird eine Liste prototypischer modernistischer Charakteristika in der Analyse dazu verwendet, abzugleichen, wie viele dieser Elemente sich in den untersuchten Texten befinden. Eine signifikante Anzahl an modernistischen Elementen deutet darauf hin, dass ein Text ?neo-modernistisch? ist. Beruhend auf den Analyseergebnissen wird als nächster Schritt die prototypische Kategorie des ?Neo-modernismus? definiert und etabliert. Außerdem wird hier die Frage behandelt, warum sich die produktive Rezeption so massiv gerade auf den Modernismus bezieht. Als kulturhistorisches Phänomen wird ?Neo-modernismus? mit Funktionen wie der Hommage, dem Ausdruck kontinuierlicher metaphysischer Verunsicherung, der Erhaltung kultureller Memoria (und damit verbundenen didaktischen Funktionen), sowie mit ethischen Funktionen (?ethical turn?) assoziiert.

This paper focuses on a ?retro-trend? that has recently emerged in contemporary novels in English: a tendency to reuse devices of literary high modernism. With regard to the non-ironic quality of this trend, ?neo-modernism? has been deemed an appropriate term for this phenomenon. The close reading of selected novels shows that modernism is re-used in a way that distances ?neo-modernism? decidedly from the postmodernist ironic approach to ?recycling? of older texts and literary styles. While Virginia Woolf is a source of inspiration to some of the writers of ?neo-modernism,? modernism in general (i.e. its typical traits) can be detected in the relevant texts, which are, however, stylistically hybrid: realist and ?tamed? postmodernist elements can also be found in them, if to a lesser degree than modernist ones. Prototype theory is employed as a method for analysis and categorisation. As a first step, a list of prototypically modernist characteristics is used in the analysis with the aim to show to what extent these characteristics can be detected in the relevant texts. A significant number of modernist elements in a contemporary text points to its being ?neo-modernist.? Based on the results of the analysis, which indeed shows a high number of prototypically modernist traits in the texts treated, the prototypical category of ?neo-modernism? is defined and established as a next step. While the ?renewalist? approach of the prototypical category of ?neo-modernism? looms large with regard to its distance to postmodernist irony, another question is raised in this paper: why is it modernism that is so productively referred to in contemporary literature? As a cultural-historical phenomenon, ?neo-modernism? is associated with functions of homage, an expression of continued metaphysical uncertainty, a ?boosting? of cultural memory (which is connected with didactic functions) and, lastly, with ethical functions and the ?ethical turn.?
