Abstract

An important synapomorph feature of all Opiliones is the occurrence of paired scent glands on the prosoma, which produce defensive secretions against predators. In this thesis, the predator spectrum and the chemical defense against such potential predators of the harvestmen Cyphophthalmus duricorius were investigated. Therefore feeding and predation experiments using various predators from the accompanying fauna of C. duricorius were conducted. The predatory species had to choose between adult or juvenile individuals of C. duricorius and tropical isopods (Trichorhina tomentosa) as prey. In these experiments Amaurobius sp., Lithobius sp., some Carabidae (Abax sp. and Pterostichus sp.) and some Staphylinidae (Ocypus sp. and Othius sp.) were documented as effective predators. It was also found that C. duricorius used its chemical defense during these feeding experiments against all predators (i.e. against Amaurobius sp., Pardosa sp. Lithobius sp. Forficula sp. Gamasina, Carabidae and Staphylinidae). The secretion was detected either by direct observation (e.g. in the course of leg dabbing) or indirectly by observation of secretion-covered, wetted bodies of adult individuals of C. duricorius or by its characteristic odor. In addition, films were made to observe the application of the defensive secretion in C. duricorius. For the first time, leg dabbing against a real predator, namely Othius punctulatus could be filmed and hence documented. In the course of leg dabbing a leg is dipped into the secretion droplets formed on the gland opening and transferred to the offender. Simultaneously, a secretion film on the surface of the body of C. duricorius is formed. Based on these experiments, it is eventually clear now that leg dabbing actually is used against predators and that it represents an essential defense strategy of C. duricorius.
