Kurzfassung: Magical elements and creatures and their underlying Concepts and Myths in Rowling?s Harry Potter Series.Verfasser: Philipp GamwegerDas Hauptaugenmerk dieser Diplomarbeit liegt auf der magischen und übernatürlichen Welt von Harry Potter, speziell aber auf den mythologischen Kreaturen und Wesen und deren zugrundeliegenden Mythen, unter spezieller Berücksichtigung von deren Interpretation durch J.K. Rowling selbst. Im Interesse einer möglichst adäquaten, umfassenden Umsetzung dieses Vorhabens wurden als Quelle alle sieben Harry Potter Bände ausgewertet und auf die mythologische Herkunft jener Wesen untersucht, die für Geschichte und Plot der Bände insgesamt bzw. des jeweiligen Bandes am wichtigsten erscheinen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung sind in der Arbeit chronologisch geordnet, das heißt, ihr Aufbaue folgt der Sequenz der Sequenz der Entstehung und Publikation der Serie, beginnend mit dem ersten Band. Alle Unterkapitel, also die magischen Wesen selbst, sind in sich alphabetisch geordnet und bieten somit einen handbuchartigen Katalog der magischen Elemente.Alle magischen Elemente und Kreaturen, die im Hauptteil der Diplomarbeit vorkommen, sind auf folgende Kriterien untersucht worden: ihr erstes Vorkommen bzw. ihre wichtigste Handlung oder Funktion in den einzelnen Bänden; die Wahrnehmung dieser Wesen aus der Sicht der Leser bzw. anderer Charaktere in Bezug auf ihre guten und bösen Charaktereigenschaften sowie, hauptsächlich, auf den mythologischen bzw. lokalen Ursprung der zugrunde gelegten Mythen. Beispiele für einige dieser Wesen sind: Drachen, Riesen, Werwölfe, Zentauren, Alchemisten, oder auch der dreiköpfige Hund Fluffy.Der kurze abschließende Teil der Diplomarbeit beinhaltet einige wesentliche Informationen bezüglich Namensgebung, Zaubersprüchen und Flüchen wie auch religiösen bzw. spirituellen Aspekten im Harry-Potter-Universum.

Abstract: Magical elements and creatures and their underlying Concepts and Myths in Rowling?s Harry Potter Series.Author: Philipp GamwegerAs the title suggests, the aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the magical and supernatural world of Harry Potter, but especially on mythological creatures/beasts and their underlying concepts of myths, specific emphasis being placed on J.K. Rowling?s own interpretation of these. In order to accomplish this objective, all seven Harry Potter books have been taken into account and investigated regarding the mythological heritage of their most important supernatural creatures/beings, not least in terms of plot and story development. The results of this investigation follow the chronological order and sequence of publication of the Potter books, starting with The Philiosopher?s Stone (the first book of the series). Within these chapters, creatures and other magical elements have been put in alphabetical order, thereby providng a sort of handbook-style catalogue of pertinent magical elements.All magical elements and creatures listed in the main part of this thesis have been investigated with respect to the following criteria: their first or most important appearance/action within the series; the readers? and other characters? perceptions of these beings in terms of good and evil character traits, and, most importantly, their mythological and regional/local origin. Examples of beings/creatures that have been dealt with in this thesis are: dragons, giants, werewolves, centaurs, alchemists, or Fluffy, the three-headed dog.The second, quite short part of the thesis is entitled ?Bits of Magic and Conclusion?. It contains some information about the name-giving of characters, important spells and charms and their derivation in terms of source-language, as well as religious/spiritual aspects in the Harry Potter universe.
