Diese Masterarbeit untersucht die Konstruktion und Destabilisierung von Normalitätskonzepten in narrativen Texten Barbara Gowdys und Jeanette Wintersons. Die unterschiedlichen Herangehensweisen der beiden Autorinnen werden verglichen und vor allem die Level diegetischer Autorität aufgezeigt, welche bei der Konstruktion von Normalitätsstandards innerhalb der Erzähltexte zum Tragen kommen. Auch wird beleuchtet, inwiefern der Leser/die Leserin von extrafiktionalen Informationen beeinflusst werden kann, wenn es darum geht, die Identität und Autorität des Erzählers/der Erzählerin zu beurteilen. Des Weiteren zeigt die Masterarbeit jene narrativen Methoden und Stilmittel auf, mit Hilfe derer die in den Erzähltexten thematisierten Normalitätskonzepte hinterfragt werden. Gowdy macht in ihren Texten vor allem von der personalen Erzählsituation Gebrauch. Permanente Grenzüberschreitungen veranschaulichen die Instabilität vorherrschender Normalitätsstandards unmittelbar, während Winterson vor allem mit Metanarrativität und Intertextualität arbeitet. Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert spezifische Konzepte, welche sowohl in Gowdys als auch in Wintersons Texten hinterfragt werden; dazu gehören unter anderem jene Normalitätskonzepte, welche Moralität, den menschlichen Körper, Sexualität und das biologische sowie soziale Geschlecht betreffen. Es wird gezeigt, dass sich die Instabilität dieser Konzepte nicht nur in betroffenen Charakteren, sondern mitunter in gesamten Erzähltexten manifestiert, von welchen somit gesagt werden kann, dass sie in ihrer Gesamtheit die Destabilisierung von Normalitätskonzepten verfolgen. Schließlich widmet sich die Arbeit auch der Frage, ob die Romane und Kurzgeschichten gewisse Auffassungen von Realität und Normalität bevorzugt vertreten, oder ob Wahrheit als dem Menschen generell unzugänglich dargestellt wird.

This thesis explores the construction and destabilisation of concepts of normalcy in narrative texts by Barbara Gowdy and Jeanette Winterson. I compare the writers? different approaches, mainly focussing on the levels of diegetic authority which are effective in creating standards of normalcy within the narratives. I explore in how far readers can be influenced by extrafictional information in judging the narrator?s identity and authority. In addition, I present those narrative techniques which are applied in order to challenge concepts of normalcy within the literary texts. Gowdy primarily uses the figural narrative mode, while in Winterson?s texts there is always a personal narrator who tends to relate his or her story in rather abstract and metaphoric terms. In Gowdy?s narratives, continuous acts of transgression exemplify the instability of predominant standards of normalcy. Winterson, on the other hand, primarily works with metanarrativity and intertextuality; thus Gowdy?s immediate approach can be contrasted with Winterson?s reflexivity and abstractness. In this thesis I analyse specific concepts that are challenged in both Gowdy?s and Winterson?s texts. These include those concepts of normalcy dealing with morality, the human body, sexuality, sex and gender. I demonstrate that the instability of these concepts does not only manifest itself in the characters but at times also characterises the structure of an entire narrative text, which shows that the narrative as a whole aims at destabilising concepts of normalcy. Finally I consider whether the novels and short stories favour certain notions of reality and normalcy, or if truth is presented to be unattainable for humans in general.
