Abstract

The religious market ? theoretical innovation or heresy? In my master thesis I focus on the question how the theory of rational choice can be applied in the field of religion. The first two chapters are dedicated to the explanation of the selected topic and related terminology as well as to the basic assumptions of rational choice. This is followed by the presentation of rational choice theory as a model of economic analysis of religion (chapter 4), whereby a special attention is paid to the model of religious market (chapter 5). The applicability of the model will also be tested by using it for the analysis of the Hungarian religious market in chapter 6. Through this analysis I do not only turn to my home country, but I study a country that has survived the communist eras in a unique way as experts like Miklos Tomka and Laurence R. Iannaccone repeatedly state and that has until recently been called the land of the hundred-person-churches. Additional theoretical assumptions such as for example the theory of pluralisation and mobilisation by Laurence R. Iannaccone, Roger Finke, Rodney Stark and William S. Bainbridge, or the theory of religious decisions by Darren R. Sherkat, are presented in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the critical views of Steve Bruce, James V. Spickard, Mark Chaves und Philip S. Gorski, Daniel M. Hungerman, R. Stephen Warner and Daniel V.A. Olson. Chapter 9 completes the picture by dealing with additional open questions and future research potentials. With this comprehensive representation of the theory I am seeking an answer to the question: is the religious market model a theoretical innovation or a heresy?
