This thesis deals with the collaboration between child and youth welfare services and elementary schools in Graz, Austria. The author chose theoretical as well as empirical approaches to describe the procedures in the case of child endangerment. In addition to the issue of child endangerment, there are other points of intersection in this collaboration, which are considered with regard to the “social space orientation”, a concept of social work that aims at improving the living conditions of all people in a defined area. Furthermore, existing areas of conflict will be highlighted and possible interventions will be presented in order to optimize collaboration in the future. In the course of this qualitative research, a total of eight experts were interviewed using guided interviews. These experts work in the field of child and youth welfare or in elementary schools and already have experience in working with each other. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed using qualitative content analysis according to Mayring.Findings were that the collaboration is very successful in the areas of initiating contact and working together on projects, and there is extensive knowledge of the concept of child endangerment and the associated processes. There is a need for improvement with regard to reporting child endangerment. The reporting culture of schools, the place where children are interviewed and the exchange of information after a report of the child welfare service could be improved by a better regular exchange between child and youth welfare services and schools and a clear definition of the respective areas of responsibility. A simplification of the information exchange of child and youth welfare towards professionals, which would be possible according to the literature, could contribute to this. The expansion of specific social services such as “Flexible Assistance” and school social work or P.U.T. (a psychosocial support team) would also improve collaboration. |
