Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem kanadischen Schriftsteller David Adams Richards und dessen fiktionaler Miramichi Region im nördlichen Teil New Brunswicks. In diesem Zusammenhang werden drei Romane erörtert: The Bay of Love and Sorrows, Mercy Among the Children und River of the Brokenhearted. Besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Analyse der einzelnen Charaktere und der Betrachtung von Macht. Als erstes wird Richards? Rolle als regionaler Autor behandelt, gefolgt von einer Ergründung der Gestalt der Macht um eine Basis für die weitere Analyse der ausgewählten Romane zu schaffen. Der Hauptteil dieser Arbeit enthält eine detaillierte Zusammenfassung von jedem Buch und eine sorgfältige Analyse der Hauptthemen in Verbindung mit einer eingehenden Erörterung der wichtigsten Charaktere. Folglich wird auch die Bedeutung der Titel behandelt. Darüber hinaus untersucht die Arbeit Richards? entgegengesetzte weibliche Charaktere und jene, die entweder die Opfer von Unterdrückung werden oder aktiv Macht auf andere ausüben. Jedes Buch behandelt Themen, die letztendlich im finalen Kapitel vereint und zusammengefasst werden. Die Arbeit schließt mit einem Vergleich der drei Romane. In diesem Kapitel werden die Machtverhältnisse zwischen den Charakteren wiedergegeben. Jenen weiblichen Protagonisten, die wissen wie sie Macht gewinnen und imstande sind diese auch auszuüben, gilt besondere Aufmerksamkeit.

This thesis focuses on the Maritime writer David Adams Richards and his fictional Miramichi region of northern New Brunswick. In this context, three novels are discussed, namely The Bay of Love and Sorrows, Mercy Among the Children, and River of the Brokenhearted. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of the individual characters and the treatment of power. First, Richards? role as a regional writer is discussed which is then followed by an examination of the nature of power in order to provide the basis for further analysis of the chosen novels. The main part of this thesis comprises a detailed overview of each book and a thorough analysis of the major themes combined with an in-depth discussion of the most important characters. Thus, the significance of the titles is also dealt with. Furthermore, the study examines Richards? opposing female characters and the characters that either become the victims of oppression or actively exert power over others. Each book renders themes that are united ultimately in the final chapter. The study therefore concludes on a chapter which compares the three novels, outlining the power relations among the characters and giving special attention to the female protagonists that know how to gain and exert power.
