Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der qualitativen Analyse von acht Red Hot Chili Peppers Liedern bezüglich deren Hit-Potential. Um die ‚geheime‘ Formel der Band für die Komposition von Hits zu entdecken werden darüber hinaus auch die Hintergründe der Bandmitglieder und der Alben, auf welchen die Lieder veröffentlicht wurden, in die Analyse miteinbezogen. Dies ist insofern notwendig, da Hits von einer gewissen Unvorhersehbarkeit geprägt sind. Folglich werden die Hintergründe äußerst erfolgreicher Lieder unter Einbezug von Struktur, Intermedialität, Liedtext, Tempo, etc. analysiert und mit kommerziell weniger erfolgreichen Liedern verglichen. Mit Hilfe von Apples professioneller Software (Logic Pro X) zum Produzieren von Musik wurden die Lieder in Tonspuren konvertiert und bearbeitet. Die Abbildungen dieser Tonspuren werden verwendet, um die Struktur der Lieder zu veranschaulichen und Unterschiede bezüglich der Lautstärke (z.B. chorus > verse etc.) darzustellen. Die ersten Kapitel der Arbeit beschäftigen sich mit der Terminologie, die für eine gründliche Song-Analyse notwendig ist. Die darauffolgenden Kapitel konzentrieren sich auf die bereits erwähnte Analyse der Lieder, Alben und Biographien der Bandmitglieder. In der Zusammenfassung werden die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Analyse präsentiert. Einer der wesentlichen Gründe, weshalb die Band in der Lage ist, kommerziell erfolgreiche Lieder zu komponieren, liegt in der Tatsache, dass sie stets einen Plan B verweigert und sich stattdessen vollkommen auf ihre Musik und ihr Wachsen als Künstler konzentriert hat. Diese Professionalität führte dazu, dass die Band Lieder schrieb, die sich ihren Weg in die Herzen von Menschen weltweit bahnen konnten. Die Universalität und Klarheit der Liedtexte, das durchdachte Zusammenspiel von Instrumenten und Texten und die Verwendung der Liedkomponenten >verse<, >chorus< und >bridge< erweisen sich als die wichtigsten Konstanten der ‚geheimen‘ Formel der Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This thesis presents a qualitative analysis of eight Red Hot Chili Peppers songs with regard to their hit potential. In order to discover the band’s ‘secret’ formula for composing hits, the band members’ backgrounds are taken into account as well as the background of the albums the eight songs appeared on. This is necessary due to the special nature, trickiness and unpredictabilities of hit songs. In the framework of this thesis, very successful songs are analyzed regarding their background, song structure, intermediality, lyrics, beats per minute, etc., and compared with songs that are less successful. Moreover, the songs were converted into audio tracks with the help of Apple’s professional Logic Pro 10 music production software. As a result, edited images of these audio-tracks are provided in order to clearly illustrate the songs’ structure as well as the importance of alternations in loudness (e.g. chorus > verse, etc.). The first chapters of the thesis focus on relevant terminology in order to provide the necessary basis for a thorough analysis of the eight Red Hot Chili Peppers songs. The following chapters focus on the aforementioned analysis of the songs, albums and biographies of the band members. A conclusion presents the most important findings of the analyses. One of the main reasons for the bands’ ability to compose commercially successful songs is their refusal of a plan B: all band members fully focused on being musicians and continuously improving themselves as artists. This professional attitude resulted in the creation of hit songs and made it possible for a perfect mixture of profundity and simplicity to find its way into the hearts of millions of people all over the world. The universality and clarity of the lyrics, the well thought-out interplay between instruments and lyrics and the use of the song sections verse, chorus, and bridge are the most important constants of the ‘secret’ formula of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
