In dieser Arbeit, Food Self-Provisioning: An Autoethnographic Exploration of a Home Garden in South East Styria, Austria, untersuche ich die Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung meiner Familie als ökonomische Aktivität, die große Bedeutung für uns und zahlreiche positive Effekte hat. Ich beabsichtige einen Beitrag zu Gibson-Graham’s (2008) Projekt zu leisten, in dem es darum geht, marginalisierte ökonomische Aktivitäten durch das gezielte Fokussieren von Aufmerksamkeit auf diese, ans Licht zu bringen. Daran angeschlossen ist die Absicht, das Potential der Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung hervorzuheben, um die Etablierung einer Gemeinwohlökonomie zu begünstigen. Der erste Teil der Arbeit bietet einen Überblick über die Diskurse zu alternativen Nahrungsmittelnetzwerken, zum urbanen Gärtnern und zur Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung. Anschließend beschreibe ich meine Methodik und hebe die Autoethnographie als Möglichkeit, alternative ökonomische Aktivitäten zu offenbaren, hervor. Das erste analytische Kapitel widmet sich der Genese der Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung meiner Familie. Darin beschreibe ich unsere Aktivitäten und diskutiere ihre Entwicklung in einem Zusammenspiel aus verschiedenen Kontexten. Der zweite analytische Teil bietet einen Einblick in die Resultate unseres Selbstversorgungstagebuchs, welches wir im Jahr 2016 führten. Ich präsentiere Details zu den Ernteerträgen und zu den Inputs an Arbeitszeit und Kapital. Ich komme zum Schluss, dass die Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung eine höchst bedeutende ökonomische Aktivität für meine Familie ist, da sie uns im Jahr 2016 erlaubte, einen beträchtlichen Teil des Gemüses, des Obstes und der Hühnereier die wir konsumierten, selbst zu produzieren und dadurch € 942,52 bei Lebensmitteleinkäufen zu sparen. Außerdem zeige ich, dass die Nahrungsmittel-Selbstversorgung durch ihre ökologischen und sozialen Vorteile das Potential hat, die Etablierung einer Gemeinwohlökonomie zu fördern.

This thesis, Food Self-Provisioning: An Autoethnographic Exploration of a Home Garden in South East Styria, Austria, explores my family’s home food production as an economic activity that has great significance for us and that has positive effects on the environment, our household economy, our social and individual lives. In so doing, the thesis intends to contribute to Gibson-Graham’s (2008) project of bringing marginalised economic activities to light by focusing academic attention on them. Furthermore, it highlights the potential of food self-provisioning for advancing the establishment of a community economy, which does not only consider economic aspects, but also environmental and social concerns. The first part of the thesis offers an overview of the scholarly discussions about alternative food networks (AFNs), urban gardening and food self-provisioning (FSP). Then the focus shifts to the methodology used during the research process, and to autoethnography as a technique for revealing alternative economic practices. The first analytical chapter is then dedicated to investigating the genesis and development of my family’s FSP. I describe our activities and discuss their development within an interplay of different contexts since my grandparents’ days. The second analytical chapter then offers an insight into the results of the self-provisioning diary kept during the gardening season of 2016. I present details about the harvest we obtained, as well as the labour and capital inputs we invested in our activities. Finally, I conclude that FSP is a highly significant alternative economic activity for my family because it allowed us to produce a considerable amount of the vegetables, fruit and chicken eggs we consumed in 2016 and thus, helped us save € 942.52 on food shopping. In addition, I conclude that because of the environmental and social benefits of our home food production, FSP has the potential to advance the establishment of a community economy.
