This thesis is a research of three hypothesis of the history of philosophy, namely thetheories of Aristippos, Epiktetos and of the modern utilitarianism. All three areconnected with each other through a hedonistic ethic and way of life. I have tried toclearly explain the different positions of the two ancient philosophers and of theEnglish utilitarianism. In doing so, I have tried to better bring to light the similaritiesas well as the differences. As far as the hedonistic ethic is concerned, I have presented two differentinterpretation models. The traditional and religious influenced model valued thehedonism in a negative way, because it supposedly ignores the social aspects. But thenew interpretations assess this way of life as mainly positive, which can, for example,be clearly seen in the feministic philosophy. For consequentialist considerations cannowadays also be found in some aspects of the utilitarian hypothesis. We can now use our modern knowledge background to read the hedonisticphilosophy of Aristippos. Then we do not longer need to negatively assess it, butrather see it as a source of many possibilities for a practical lifestyle and a faircoexistence. |
