Rock und Pop Texte werden meist vernachlässigt und erfahren wenig Wertschätzung, wenn über Literatur gesprochen wird. Wirft man jedoch einen genaueren Blick darauf, kann man feststellen, dass viele Künstler großartige Lieder geschrieben haben, die sorgfältig komponierte und nachdenklich stimmende Texte enthalten, welche zweifellos als literarische Werke bezeichnet werden können. Generell bietet vor allem Singer-Songwriter Musik dem Hörer oft sinnvolle und kritische Texte, die die Bezeichnung 'Literatur' verdienen. Diese Diplomarbeit setzt sich mit solch kunstvoller Musik auseinander und betrachtet ihre Texte. Eine detaillierte Analyse von Anti-Kriegstexten ? mit Schwerpunkt auf Country Joe McDonalds 1971 veröffentlichtem Album War War War, das auf Gedichten von Robert William Service basiert ? der 1960er und 70er wird vorgenommen. Darüber hinaus werden Lieder von Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Kenny Rogers und Black Sabbath analysiert. Diese Musiker spiegeln eine zum Teil subjektive Auswahl des Autors wider, da es hunderte von Liedern anderer Künstler gibt, die Anti-Kriegstexte enthalten.Da jedes der besprochenen Lieder ein einzigartiges Kunstwerk darstellt, behandelt diese Arbeit nicht jeden Text auf die selbe Art und Weise. Daher unterscheiden sich die jeweiligen Analysen voneinander in Bezug auf Herangehensweise und Struktur und enthalten ausschließlich für die jeweiligen Songs besonders relevante Punkte.Eine kurzen Einführung in die Vietnam-Ära und die Protestbewegung, die aufzuzeigt, weshalb gerade diese Zeit so überaus ertragreich in Bezug auf Protestsongs war, folgen einige wichtige biographische Details zu Country Joe McDonald und Robert W. Service, wie auch Hintergrundinformationen über das Album War War War. Der Hauptteil analysiert die Lieder von Country Joe McDonald, sowie einige Songs der anderen Musiker.

Rock and Pop lyrics are usually neglected and little appreciated by literary critics and criticism. However, if we take a closer look we can find that many artists composed great songs containing carefully written and thought-provoking lyrics that can be regarded as literary works of a high standard. Singer-songwriter music in general often provides the listener with meaningful and critical texts, and especially the songs on Country Joe McDonald's album War War War, which are all based on already existing poems by Robert William Service fit the label 'literature'. This diploma thesis undertakes to deal with such artful music and examine its lyrics. It provides a detailed analysis of anti-war lyrics of the 1960s and 70s, focussing mainly on Country Joe McDonald's 1971 album War War War. Additionally, songs by other artists, namely Country Joe and the Fish, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Kenny Rogers and Black Sabbath, are analysed. These artist are of course a somewhat subjective selection by the author, as there are hundreds of other songs by numerous artists containing anti-war lyrics.As every song is a unique work of art, this paper does not deal with all of the lyrics in the same way. Therefore, every single analysis differs more or less from the other ones in terms of its approaches and structure and only includes points relevant to the particular songs.Regarding the paper's structure, a short introduction to the Vietnam Era and the Protest Movement is given in order to show why this particular time in history was so fruitful in terms of protest songs. Next, some short biographical notes on the lives of Country Joe McDonald and Robert W. Service, as well as background information about the album War War War are provided. In the main part, the songs by Country Joe McDonald are analysed, followed by selected songs of the other musicians.
