Abstract

As the business world expands, it is common to work in projects over boundaries. Intercultural relationships together with cultural diversity and globalization affect the daily business of almost every company in Europe. This master thesis answers the question how cultural differences can have impact on project outcomes. It will be analyzed how projects with team members, who have intercultural backgrounds, are more likely to fail. Based on a theoretical analysis of the dimensions of culture by Alfons Trompenaars and Geert Hofstede, the cultural differences between countries will be displayed. The potential changes of intercultural projects and project teams are demonstrated by a case study of a German company which is currently expanding in Eastern Europe. The focus, after culture was analyzes in general, will indicate Germany, Hungary und Rumania. The theory of the cultural dimensions will meet the experience of the questioned experts of the analyzed company. Another focus is made towards intercultural project management and how it challenges today project managers and his/her team. The research results display that soft skills characteristics are most important for project managers to meet the project objectives.
