This thesis examines alternative fuels and propulsion systems for heavy-duty motor trucks. It takes a look at state-of-the-art technologies and their potential range of ap-plication. Heavy-duty trucks, used for goods traffic, face other difficulties than smaller vehicles. The weight of a propulsion system strongly influences the payload of a vehicle. The heavier the power unit, the smaller are the quantities of goods, which can be trans-ported. Moreover, possible costs are a decisive factor in the road haulage sector. Generally small margins of profit in transportation and shipping lead to a strong focus in cost reduction. Choosing the right propulsion system for the right application can help to reduce costs. To provide a detailed cost-calculation for alternatively powered trucks, possible expense factors are listed and explained. For a selective type of ve-hicle, costs for different propulsion systems are examined. Furthermore, this thesis provides recommendations for choosing the fitting propulsion system and looks at possible trends in Austria.
